This past weekend we built the pen that will house our 50 broilers on pasture. We are using the Polyface Farms pen model because I’ve seen it in action in person, Polyface has proven it’s ability and longevity, and well…it works. We started building the pen on Friday around lunchtime and finished Saturday afternoon. Having already built one I feel confident we could build another in a day. Here are a few pics of the process:
Here’s the basic frame. Took up the whole garage!
From there we added the hardware cloth around front and the corrugated metal.
Added the doors
Getting it down the driveway and down the sidewalk was pretty entertaining. My neighbors probably think I’ve lost my mind!
Once out to the pasture, we towed it by truck to our pasture
Then to it’s final resting place, awaiting the arrival of 50 little birdies that will make a tasty dinner!
This was a fun project and I look forward to building more! Thanks to Joel Salatin for the design and making it easy enough that a novice carpenter like yours truly can build one!
